They feel great, by the way, and they look fine as well. A nick here or there, but what should one expect from a set of hubs that has been kicking around since 2008 or so?
With this set of hubs now in hand, I can start thinking about some rims. There is one big fork in the road to consider. Which way I go will determine price and wheel overall weight in the end.
I could go carbon or aluminum. If I go aluminum I'll likely roll with some Velocity Blunt SS rims. I like them. They are sturdy, look good,are a nice width, and there are options for colors, polished, or custom anodized rims. But honestly, I'll probably get black anodized ones if I go aluminum.
Carbon rims are a different story. Most well known name brands are waaaaaaaay expensive. Then you have the carbon rims from China like Nextie or ICAN which have good reputations and perhaps are better known for the rims they make with other brand names on them.
Like I said, I have to decide which fork in the road to take. Then I will have to buy two rims, probably some spokes, and get busy.

Has Velocity increased the G height of the Blunt SS? It’s (was) well short of ETRTO spec.
ReplyDeleteI had a tire blow off at 25psi on one while inflating—twice. A used tire that was fine on other rims before and after.
A TLR tire with a bead height taller than the rim’s G height.
I had contacted Velocity about my concerns when I got the rims. “Our engineer says it’s fine.”
I contacted them again after the blow off with no reply.

@shiggy person - Well, my answer is "I do not know". I do have Velocity Blunt SS wheels on the Honeman Flyer running Ritchey SpeedMax WC tires at pressures anywhere from upper 20's to 35psi.
DeleteI've had no issues and those tires were used when mounted to these rims.
I cannot say how old the rims were, but I've had them for several years and I believe they were from around 2020, but I cannot say for certain as they were given to me as partial payment for some labor I did back then.
@shiggy person - Check that comment above.... I received ONE of those rims as a partial payment. The other was NEW in 2024. I forgot I bought that from Ben Witt when I was putting the Honeman Flyer together.
