Friday News And Views

 State Bicycle Co. Announces Monster Fork v2:

On Tuesday of this past week, State Bicycle Co. announced a version two of their Carbon Monster Fork. The new version features an all-carbon construction with a tapered steer tube. The eye-catcher here is the adjustable drop out to attain two different off sets for the fork. 

The off sets are 49mm and 55.5mm. More on this in a minute, but the user can change the offset by flipping a "chip" in the drop out cavity. The fork is compatible with 27.5" tires and 700c tires. Maximum tire size allowable is determined by the offset chosen. So, for the 49mm offset you can go up to 27.5 X 2.3" or 700 X 55mm. In the longer, 55.5mm offset you can go to a 27.5 X 2.45" or 700 X 58mm tire. The Monster Fork also has rack and fender mounts along with the triple boss sets of accessory mounting points on each fork leg. Maximum load is set at 25Kg or 55lbs. Axle to crown is 396 in the short offset and 404mm in the longer offset. The price for the Monster Fork is set at $299.99 USD.

Comments: Now, let's get back to the offset options this fork provides. The marketing copy on State's site gets this wrong, which is a commonly made mistake. I wrote an offset explainer in 2007 for the blog which you can read HERE. That was written concerning 29"ers, but the same principles apply for any wheel size and geometry. The short version is that, all else remaining the same, your shorter off sets are going to bring more stability while your longer offsets bring less stability. Many people feel that a longer offset is more stable, but that is not how bicycle front end geometry works. 

The other bit State doesn't point out is that due to the chip being at an angle to the ground when mounted to a bicycle, the flipping of the chip will minutely change your bottom bracket height, head tube angle, handle bar height, seat angle, and all that may be noticeable to some folks. Some may not ever notice it. The changes would be minimal, but it is worth noting that any axle to crown variances, which are called out in the differing axle to crown specs, will change all that other stuff as well. 

I love the idea here, of course, being a nerd about geometry. But typically swapping stuff around like offset chips isn't really a big deal to most riders, and additionally, humans are so adept at adapting, (ha!), that most riders probably would feel fine either way you set the fork up after two or three rides. (I know, I've run an experiment concerning this.)

Six USA Athletes To Compete In eSports Championships in Abu Dhabi:

Coming up on October 26th, the top 20 male and top 20 female eSports riders are convening in Abu Dhabi for the World Championship eSports sanctioned by the UCI. 

The event consists of three parts, or "races", in which the contestants will accumulate points based upon finishes. The riders with the most points at the end of the day will be crowned as World Champions. 

Six riders, three male and three female, are included from the USA. They are Kristen Kulchinsky, Jacqueline Godbe, Ellexi Snover, Hayden Pucker, Neal Fryett and Zach Nehr. 

Comments: Would this even be a thing had it not been for COVID? I wonder about that. Anyway, kudos to any athlete that competed in this format. I cannot stand indoor cycling myself, but "trainer rides to no-where" are a staple of some folks riding. I know, I know....You can do courses, compete against others, yada, yada, yada.... But the fact remains that you are still sitting in the same spot where you began at the end. I'm not down with that. 

Not that I haven't tried. I used to own Krietler rollers, I've had various stationary trainers, and I even have a "smart trainer" in the house I've never used. Probably won't ever use it. Maybe I'll donate that to someone.....or the Collective, but in the two and a half plus years I've worked there we cannot give a trainer away and we have several nice ones. Says something there to me.... 

But I'm not dissing on anyone that gets into this stuff. You do you! I'll cheer you on from outside. Literally!

Brompton Bicycles Offers New Folding Gravel Bike:

News came out this week, and was all over the internet and social channels, concerning Brompton's new "G Line" folding 20" wheeled bicycle. It has an 8 speed Alfine internally geared hub, beefy 20" wheels, and a "revised geomeyrty" for all-road riding. Plus you can stuff the claimed 30+ lbs bike into the back of almost any car or truck for easy transportation to adventures. 

The G Line will cost $2,399.00 USD when it becomes available in 2025. There also will be an electrified version of the bike coming as well. 

Comments: Okay, neat, I guess. Here's what I know to be true. Smaller diameter wheels are at a disadvantage to larger diameter wheels. It is a physics thing. Alfine hubs are limited in gearing range and require frequent servicing to keep them alive. 

Why have an internally geared hub design and a tensioner that hangs down like a derailleur waiting to get ripped off in the next muddy section? This seems to be a disadvantage when internally geared hubs are a great idea partially because they allow the riddance of "dangly bits"

At 30 plus pounds (non-electrified) and at twenty-four hundred bucks? Ahh..... No. Maybe for certain people this opens up possibilities, and for them I am happy. But for most riders, in my opinion, this seems pricey and not very well thought out.

Bicycle Retail Continues To Struggle:

Getting into the last quarter of 2024 now and it seems that bicycle retail is still struggling to find its footing two years post-COVID. There are many reasons why this is happening. Among the many reasons is the anachronistic way bicycle retail is handled in the 21st Century. 

I began my journey in bicycle retail and repair in the early 1990's. I can honestly say that not much has changed in the thirty-plus  years since then. That doesn't reflect the massive change in riders, buying habits, and desires of riders in 2024 and beyond. 

I find, and have found, that certain issues have stymied advancement of bicycle retail and now that alternatives exist, bicycle retail as we have known it may on its way to becoming extinct, leaving nothing in its wake to replace it. At least nothing at scale or worthy of servicing the riders in this country. 

Of course, there are some bright spots, but they are few and far between. How will those spots be able to survive without the backing of the industry or without revolutionary changes, I am not sure. Right now the industry has done what it has done for many years, and that is to hook up its wagon to whatever trend can be the horse to pull that wagon, as broken and busted up as it is, lurching forward into the next phase of cycling that takes off. Then the industry will hitch itself to that trend and hope for better days again, like it has for a half a century. 

Here's what I see as the deficiencies of bicycle retail in 2024:

  • Employee training and retention. With rampant employee turnover, it is impossible to build a knowledgeable, trustworthy employee people will want to lean on.  
  • Poor Compensation: The industry practically guarantees employee turnover with its poor wages and benefits. 
  • Focus on Racing: The high-end support of brands on racing in all disciplines is misplaced and takes away from what the largest portion of potential riders needs and wants. Practical bicycle safety in routes and in bicycles for everyday riding is something most brands give lip service to only, and nothing gets done in reality because of this. The response of the average citizen is predictably poor. Shops can only do so much against this and many don't do a thing at all.

New Pivot Vault Version Now On Offer:

Pivot Cycles announced on Thursday that a new version of their Vault model is now available. The bike has more tire clearance and more capability to carry water and accessories than before while still coming in at a lighter weight than the outgoing version. 

The frame features a decoupled seat post/seat tube arrangement which Pivot calls "ISO FLEX", which provides more rider comfort. New also is Pivot's "TOOL SHED", a cable management and storage system allowing riders to stash items inside the frame. There is also cable guides through the frame to prevent rattling over rough surfaces. There are several accessory mounting points and the frame can hold two water bottles on the top of the down tube, one underneath, and one on the seat tube. 

The frame is 2X front derailleur capable, has dropper post routing, and the frame is also suspension corrected for 40mm travel gravel suspension forks. The new Vault carbon rigid fork is designed for better compliance as well. Tire clearance is a generous 50mm in 1X mode and 47mm with a 2X crankset. 

The geometry is a bit different with sizing running longer top tube measurements than what you might be used to. Pivot advises using a short stem. The bottom bracket is not on the low side, but is pretty decent, striking a good middle ground for current gravel geometry. The head tube angle is on the slacker side with models in their five size range checking in at 70° for a small to 71° for the XL. Sizes in between range accordingly between those two extremes. The chain stay length is a tight 420mm, which is on the short side for gravel. 

Prices range from $5,649.00 to $6,149.00 using Pivot's specs for complete bikes. 

Comments: This is an interesting bike. Pivot's Vault model was originally a cyclo cross bike but now is a fully MTB influenced gravel bike design. Pivot has infused several interesting features with their water bottle capacity and that short rear end. I like that they thought of a way to introduce some compliance in the seat post area and that they thought about the fork compliance as well. And the price isn't bad compared to many other brand's high-end gravel offerings.

Friday News And Views

Maxxis Debuts The Receptor Tire:

Last Monday news hit the web-o-sphere that Maxxis was debuting a new tire called the "Receptor". I took a look and said to myself, "Byway v2". It's no wonder that Maxxis, who haven't been a big player in terms of recognition in the gravel scene, wanted to pull a model out with a striking resemblance to one of WTB's best selling gravel tires, the Byway

I know at one point a few years ago, the Byway was the number one seller for WTB. So, with Maxxis not garnering a lot of buzz in the gravel scene, it makes sense, on one hand, to pretty much copy the Byway. Hopefully Maxxis gives this Byway-like tire a bit more volume than WTB gave the Byway, a tire that they are calling a 40mm tire. The Byway is pretty much a 38mm tire in 700c form, so it is a bit of a bummer if you are in the 40mm-43mm camp for a tire on your gravel bike. 

Of course, there is a 650B variant, a tire listed at 47mm, again, very Byway-like. The 650B one also is currently the only variant listed on the Maxxis website, although news regurgitations of the press release claim there will also be a 700c X 40mm black and skin wall version available at some point. (To be fair, the 700c sizes and skin wall options are mentioned in the video on the Receptor page.)

Comments: Smooth center + knobby edges = Gravel Tire® Seems to be the common tread design with variations on the theme ever since Challenge Tire's aptly named 'Gravel Grinder' tire came out about eight years ago now. The knobs on this Receptor tire look almost like an after-thought though. They come so far down the shoulders of the tire that, on a narrower 40mm carcass, you'd have to be in a pretty steep lean or in a really soft, loose terrain condition to even engage those tread features. This is what I would deem as a "Mental Insurance" tread feature. It makes you feel like you've got something other than a slick tire when in fact all you have is a slick tire with some ornamental tread blocks. To Maxxis' credit, these 'knobs' look pretty minimal, so they shouldn't add a lot of weight. 

Maxxis gravel tires used to be a real treat to mount tubeless due to their carbon fiber strand bead.  Maxxis makes no mention of this feature on their site, so if they are not doing that anymore, all the better. I'm keenly interested in the 700 X 40mm size, because if it is really 40mm, then it would leap into my favorites category, assuming all else was up to snuff. With Maxxis, there really is no reason to believe it wouldn't be.

Panaracer Drops Sponsorship of Gravel Racing Team:

One of the first industry sponsored gravel racing teams had its former title sponsor drop out for 2021. The new Abus Pro Gravel racing team was announced February 10th with no mention of Panaracer's involvement anymore. 

Panaracer, on the other hand, started putting out feelers for brand ambassadors on February 1st. Panaracer posted on their Facebook page the following: "As a Panaracer ambassador, we will support you in your riding adventures in return for your original content, stoke and feedback." Applications for brand ambassadorship closed on February 14th.

Comments: Obviously Panaracer is taking a much different approach to sponsorship going forward.  You may have heard about "direct to consumer" type retail, well this might be seen as 'direct to consumer marketing' since the company seems to be cutting out any 'traditional' types of athlete activation. Obviously, getting content and tester feedback for a few sets of tires and "social media fame" will be a good trade off from what is spent on traditional marketing. Remember the old saw: "I owe my soul to the Company Store"? Kinda smells like that to me. Also noteworthy of thought: I don't know what types of events Panaracer will be involved in going forward, but it wouldn't surprise me to see that Panaracer becomes a grassroots events sponsor, if they do anything at all. 

 Also, as seen in the Tweet shown,  Panaracer will have a 'new, modernized look', whatever that means. (Actually, we get to find out Monday- I got an embargoed press release) and it will be interesting to see how their marketing changes going forward.

Pivot Cycles Introduces New E-Vault Gravel Bike:

Tuesday news broke that Pivot Cycles has introduced a HPC (motorized bicycle) that is meant for city and gravel usage. It's dubbed the E-Vault

This Hybrid Powered Cycle (HPC) features a Fazua motor which has three levels of assist, adjustable on the fly. The motor also features a complete decoupling mode for 100% human powered cycling with no drag from the motor's internals. (Of course, you still have to overcome the extra weight) The frame is carbon fiber and it features top-shelf components from Shimano and others. Pivot lists the starting price at $9,999.00USD. 

Comments: There were a few items I was curious about concerning this bike. How far could you go on a charge? What sort of weight are you pedaling around in decoupled mode? What's the geometry like? Well, besides the geometry, which you have to scroll down the page for, the other two question's answers were buried in the FAQ. 

The geometry is okay. It is what I am starting to feel like is "Gravel Bike 1.0 Geometry". 72° head angle, 70mm bottom bracket drop. Pretty 'five years ago' geometry there, and as far as I am concerned, a geometry that wasn't right from the get-go. But that said, it's okay. It works alright but there is a better way to go. 

Now the weight- almost 30lbs. Not bad for a HPC, but hold on here. This is important. In the FAQ Pivot claims they could get about 45-50 miles in a single charge with less than 4,000ft of climbing. They do not give an indication of what percentage of that was boosted riding versus non-assisted, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was 100% boosted for that amount of mileage/climbing. That's not very impressive. Not when you consider how easily one can accumulate 4,000 feet of climb in a state like Iowa on a 50 mile ride. Oh.....and wind is a factor too. That isn't accounted for in this measure for all we know here. 

And the bike is ten grand minimum. Ouch! HPC's are going to get people out of their cars and riding more? Not in this case, I don't think that is the idea.

Some Eurobike Musings

 This week is Eurobike, the show in Germany all about bikes. Here following are some newsy bits and musings I have on what has been shown on the MTB side of things.

Nope! Never Happen In DH. 

Ten years ago EVERYBODY that rode DH or long travel mountain bikes were saying you couldn't do it. That "it" would NEVER happen and that 26" wheels would ALWAYS be the standard wheel size for DH machines.

Now it is 2019 going on 2020 and find me a currently produced 2020 model 26 inch wheeled DH bike. There might be one, maybe even two, but everyone knows now that 26 inch wheeled DH bikes are rarer than hen's teeth these days. But.....they said it couldn't be done! Let's review the current release of Pivot's Phoenix 29 DH sled.

First off, it has a mind boggling 190mm of rear travel! Try wrapping your 2009 mind around that. Your head would have exploded. But that's not all. This new bike Pivot is rolling out has a lower stand over height than the outgoing 27.5" model had. Mind = BOOM!

Pivot also says this in their press release for the bike:

"Without a doubt, 29er wheels roll faster, smooth out rough courses and carry a ridiculous amount of momentum. They offer improved tracking and braking in turns too. Short 17” (44.3mm) chainstays add ‘playful’, ‘flickable’ and ‘manuals for days’ to its repertoire. This makes it incredibly fun in a bike park, and extremely quick in tight, technical wooded sections."

Obviously that has to be a fabrication. Lies! There is no way a long travel 29"er can do these things! 

Unless it can. 


Surly Troll says, "I have the most braze-on warts!" Marin Pine Mountain says, "Hold my beer!":

Bikepacking has gone off the deep end. Well, in terms of mounting points, it has. Example: Marin's 2020 Pine Mountain. Sheesh! Don't clamp a hand around that down tube, you may get punctured! (Only kidding!) But yeah.....that looks ridiculous. 

And that isn't the only thing that looks ridiculous on what makes for a "modern day bikepacking rig". To my mind, many things about these sorts of takes on the load bearing, off road touring rig don't add up. For instance- Short chain stays. Not just short, but really short. Joe Breeze once told me that the longest, uninterrupted tube is the kind that gives the best ride. He was right too. Look at traditional touring rigs, or ride any bike with long-ish chain stays made from high quality steel. Smooth for days. But no- let's make these tubes as short as possible. Then the riders hindquarters will be right above the axle of the rear wheel.  Uh-huh. Yep..... Where do you get the bumpiest ride on the bus again? 

Then there is the whole bed roll on the handle bar deal. Or any loading up front, really. Let's see, who had that all figured out already? Oh! Yeah! Those randonnuer dudes and lasses, that's who. "Short trail" works best for front loading, but, ya know, let's slacken out the head angles to chopper-like status and put even shorter off-set forks on there. Yep.....just the ticket. 

Now lets buy ALL THE BRAZE ONS! We MUST use them!! (Sorry.......not sorry!

Anywho......Maybe I'm the one that just doesn't get it. That could be.

Less Is More?

The whole down hill mountain bike gig is, perhaps, so far removed from the reality of riding mountain bikes, that any comparisons to "normal" mountain biking activities is sort of an apples to oranges one. However; one thing has come out of DH that is influencing more typical MTB styles and that is less cogs on the rear wheel. 

While the two "Big S" corporations chase 12 speed dominance and a little Spanish operation is pushing 13 speeds already, there are some companies looking at what less cogs on a system can do for mountain bikers. For one thing, the system can be more durable, longer wearing, and less expensive, theoretically. One company pushing this technology is BOX Components

It's a nifty looking system, and it is less expensive. It may not be lighter weight, but it certainly could be more durable. I mean, just look at the chain. If there is one thing that these 11 and 12 speed systems are really pushing the limits on, it is chain technology. I'm starting to hear about more snapped chains and quick links these days. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why that is. 

One other thing a lot of folks don't understand is the "margin for error". This is the concept that a cassette with less cogs, thicker cogs, and heavier duty chain is less prone to minor out of alignment/adjustment issues. I remember seeing folks with 7 speed MTB components that were running around, happy as larks, with slightly bent out of whack rear mech hangars and derailleur cages. Try that with you fancy-pants 12 speed stuff. Your bike probably won't even shift correctly, if at all. 

So, it is cool to see companies bringing more durable, less complex systems back into the fold. TRP also announced a 7 speed DH based system as well. I think there is definitely a place for such things. Less maintenance, less "margin for error", and it means more fun for a longer time. That's what it really is all about anyway, right?

Now it is 2019 going on 2020 and find me a currently produced 2020 model 26 inch wheeled DH bike. There might be one, maybe even two, but everyone knows now that 26 inch wheeled DH bikes are rarer than hen's teeth these days. But.....they said it couldn't be done! Let's review the current release of Pivot's Phoenix 29 DH sled.

First off, it has a mind boggling 190mm of rear travel! Try wrapping your 2009 mind around that. Your head would have exploded. But that's not all. This new bike Pivot is rolling out has a lower stand over height than the outgoing 27.5" model had. Mind = BOOM!

Pivot also says this in their press release for the bike:

"Without a doubt, 29er wheels roll faster, smooth out rough courses and carry a ridiculous amount of momentum. They offer improved tracking and braking in turns too. Short 17” (44.3mm) chainstays add ‘playful’, ‘flickable’ and ‘manuals for days’ to its repertoire. This makes it incredibly fun in a bike park, and extremely quick in tight, technical wooded sections."

Obviously that has to be a fabrication. Lies! There is no way a long travel 29"er can do these things! 

Unless it can.

Bikepacking has gone off the deep end. Well, in terms of mounting points, it has. Example: Marin's 2020 Pine Mountain. Sheesh! Don't clamp a hand around that down tube, you may get punctured! (Only kidding!) But yeah.....that looks ridiculous. 

And that isn't the only thing that looks ridiculous on what makes for a "modern day bikepacking rig". To my mind, many things about these sorts of takes on the load bearing, off road touring rig don't add up. For instance- Short chain stays. Not just short, but really short. Joe Breeze once told me that the longest, uninterrupted tube is the kind that gives the best ride. He was right too. Look at traditional touring rigs, or ride any bike with long-ish chain stays made from high quality steel. Smooth for days. But no- let's make these tubes as short as possible. Then the riders hindquarters will be right above the axle of the rear wheel.  Uh-huh. Yep..... Where do you get the bumpiest ride on the bus again? 

Then there is the whole bed roll on the handle bar deal. Or any loading up front, really. Let's see, who had that all figured out already? Oh! Yeah! Those randonnuer dudes and lasses, that's who. "Short trail" works best for front loading, but, ya know, let's slacken out the head angles to chopper-like status and put even shorter off-set forks on there. Yep.....just the ticket. 

Now lets buy ALL THE BRAZE ONS! We MUST use them!! (Sorry.......not sorry!

Anywho......Maybe I'm the one that just doesn't get it. That could be.

Less Is More?

The whole down hill mountain bike gig is, perhaps, so far removed from the reality of riding mountain bikes, that any comparisons to "normal" mountain biking activities is sort of an apples to oranges one. However; one thing has come out of DH that is influencing more typical MTB styles and that is less cogs on the rear wheel. 

While the two "Big S" corporations chase 12 speed dominance and a little Spanish operation is pushing 13 speeds already, there are some companies looking at what less cogs on a system can do for mountain bikers. For one thing, the system can be more durable, longer wearing, and less expensive, theoretically. One company pushing this technology is BOX Components

It's a nifty looking system, and it is less expensive. It may not be lighter weight, but it certainly could be more durable. I mean, just look at the chain. If there is one thing that these 11 and 12 speed systems are really pushing the limits on, it is chain technology. I'm starting to hear about more snapped chains and quick links these days. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why that is. 

One other thing a lot of folks don't understand is the "margin for error". This is the concept that a cassette with less cogs, thicker cogs, and heavier duty chain is less prone to minor out of alignment/adjustment issues. I remember seeing folks with 7 speed MTB components that were running around, happy as larks, with slightly bent out of whack rear mech hangars and derailleur cages. Try that with you fancy-pants 12 speed stuff. Your bike probably won't even shift correctly, if at all. 

So, it is cool to see companies bringing more durable, less complex systems back into the fold. TRP also announced a 7 speed DH based system as well. I think there is definitely a place for such things. Less maintenance, less "margin for error", and it means more fun for a longer time. That's what it really is all about anyway, right?
