 Local Sale/Swap

 On September 11th, 2025, from 4:00pm - 7:00pm, N.Y. Roll and I will be holding a bike swap in his yard. I realize many of you are not local to us, but if you are, we will be selling some stuff for pretty sweet deals. 

N.Y. Roll says he's got some crank sets to unload, and I do also. But I also have this Origin 8 Scout fat bike, (in the image), and several wheel sets which will be there.  More surprises if you come.

The Bookman Volume  Light

Nights Are Longer - Here's A Great Light For Night Rides:

With nights getting longer and night riding becoming more likely, I have a recommendation for a light which I think is not well known but is a fantastic option for night riding. 

It is the Bookman Volume. This light has a couple standout features which I think separate it from almost every other light choice you can make. If you are wanting to know all the things about this light I reviewed two years ago, check out this post HERE. 

The main feature is the knob which allows you to instantly and easily flick to any desired power level on the light without going through multiple pushes of a button. Tired of touch screens and wimpy buttons? This light is for you. 

It also mounts to Garmin mounts, and it comes with a nice mount, by the way, but this opens up the options which you may already have for mounting. The 1500 model, linked above, can run up to 5 hours at 750 Lumens, which is half power for the light and likely bright enough for almost any gravel road. 

Anyway, I LOVE the one sent to me to review two years ago and it is one of the best lights I have ever used. Check it out.

So, I'm trying to set the expectation that I won't be answering questions, or doing any kind of work on a purchase after the fact from this bike swap. 

Thinking About Some Blog Stuff

 A commenter late in December triggered a few thoughts concerning this blog when they said something to the effect that "You've written on this and other similar subjects on the blog here before". 

That got me to thinking. With this blog nearly at 7000 posts (!!!) there are a lot of subjects that I've written about already and which my commentary for is still relevant. In other words, I am at risk of repeating myself daily here to a much higher degree than ever. 

I've been a little diligent in some areas by compiling series or subjects into their own pages. (Trans Iowa Stories, Drop Bar Articles) That said, more might need to be done there to make referencing for me and others a bit easier to do. 

I may be doing some house-cleaning in along those lines this year. But since the "GTDRI Stories" is winding up soon, (and should be getting its own page as well), I thought a Sunday series based on topics might be good, and it would be a post with a lot of links and serve as a kind of portal to those similar posts done in the past. I could just tell you to search a term in the search box (upper left corner by the Blogger icon), but who is going to do that? No one.... 

I also have to do a back-up of this entire blog on a hard drive or to the "cloud", but I could use some advice on that, so if any of you have suggestions, just hit me up in the comments or at g.ted.productions@gmail.com.

Nearing the start of the 20th year of blogging here in May, so I wanted to tidy things up around here. It would be a shame to have all this go "poof!" and not have it backed up anywhere easily accessible.

Garage Sale:

Just thought I'd post a few things that will be going up on the Garage Sale Page soon. If you are interested in any of the following items, this is your early-bird notice before I go and post these on the page and elsewhere for sale. 

This will mostly be wheels. I have a pair of carbon Irwin GX 35 650B carbon wheels (one shown in the image here), a pair of Easton EA70 AX aluminum 700c wheels, a pair of HED Eroica (Now called Emporia) wheels in 700c, and a pair of WTB Proterra wheels in 700c. E-mail me at g.ted.productions@gmail.com for prices. They will be very good deals. Shipping to lower 48 only will be extra. Prefer PayPal payment unless you are local.  

I am also considering strongly selling my Blackborow DS as shown here. (Yes, the pogies would be included) This would be best sold locally,as shipping this would be prohibitively expensive. 

It's been upgraded where it matters as far as I was concerned. I only swapped out the handle v=bar for a Carbon Jones H Bar and the seat post is a Thomson. Otherwise I have only had to install a new chain, (fresh, zero miles on it) and that's it. 

This won't be cheap, but I will sell it for a reasonable price. Again, I'm not interested in shipping it. I'll hang on to it rather than do that at this point, but someone that will ride it more than I do should have this bike.

Limited supply. Help me clear out my house of these!

Garage Sale:

Some of you may have noticed that I have a "Garage Sale Page" here on G-Ted Productions. I put the odd part or bicycle up there that I need to move on down the road. I don't always "advertise" that, and some folks have stumbled upon a good deal by watching that page. Anyway.....

If you were thinking that the TIv13 t-shirt was cool, you aren't alone. They were a big hit at the event this year. Unfortunately, I was stiffed by several late droppers from the event that asked to have a t-shirt reserved for themselves. Now, I am stuck with a pile of t-shirts that are (mostly) not my size, so I cannot use them. Maybe you could?

I'm not going to lay it all out here, go to that Garage Sale Page and read it. The info is all there. I'm just going to ask you to help me free up some space here and to help me get these on people's backs so they are getting put to good use. The price is right, (basically cost plus shipping), so you cannot go wrong here for a limited run design in three colors on a quality cotton t-shirt. Shirts will be sent out in cardboard boxes and I may throw in a couple stickers there as well.UPDATE: Thanks for the awesome response so far! I am out of size Small and XL now. Plenty of Mediums, and 4 XXL's as of 7:00am.

 I have some other hardware that I will be putting on the page later on this Spring/early Summer. It is low priority on the "To Do List", but eventually there will be some cool stuff popping up there. This would be all bicycle related, of course. Things like frame/forks, maybe a wheel set, or other parts. Stay tuned.....

 Almanzo Weekend:

My son and I will be spending tomorrow up at Cherry Grove, Minnesota to help support the Almanzo 100 with RidingGravel.com. We should be dodging rain drops, by the sounds of it, so there maybe will not be the throngs of riders that we saw last year. Hard to say. It's been my experience that when you have a free to enter event with a bad weather forecast it tends to put a damper on turn out. 

But regardless, we will have fun. I'm not sure exactly what Ben has planned, he just wants me to show up and I'm sure he will have everything in order. I do know we have a RidingGravel.com banner, the signs from last year, and we will be in a Surly Brewing pop up tent. Same location as shown here in the image, so it shouldn't be too tough to find us. You should be going right by us on the road and we will be on your left side, if you are planning on riding this event. 

And if you are riding, and worried about the weather, well, just go and ride. Any day out riding is better than not riding. Have fun, and enjoy the gravelly good times. I hope to see some of you up there, and if you are riding, or just hanging out, please stop by and say hello.

After the Almanzo support weekend I will be dialing in my rig that I will be taking to Kansas to ride the Flint Hills with. As of now I have no reason not to be doing that ride on anything but my Gen I Fargo, but that could change in a couple of weeks! 

I have a route plan in mind, and I probably will be doing a similar ride as I did last year when I was down there. I'll have to start checking the weather and looking at maps here so I have a better idea of where I will be going before I get down there. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the same stuff I saw last year again. It was good and I am sure I will have to include at least a few things from last year's ride. Well, depending on the wind! I should probably plan an alternative route just in case of contrary winds.

Not this year: Interbike Outdoor demo was a ghost town and not like this at all.

In the "Hey! Didn't I just Say this?" (Like years ago) File

Interbike suffered its worst attendance in years this week and even the press had to admit what I had been witnessing for several years back in the day when I used to trek out to Sin City. Check out this missive from Pink Bike. But like I said, I've been ringing this bell for years now.

Back in 2010, Interbike said that the '10 show would be the last in Las Vegas. It was going to go back to Anaheim California. A lot of people were stoked about that idea. Then the I-Bike wonks yanked the carpet out from hopeful vendors, media, and attendees' feet and put the show back in Las Vegas the following year where it has remained ever since. Was that its downfall? Well......maybe partly it was. However; I think it has a lot more to do with what I've said all along- and what the author of the PinkBike story finally cops to- that being that Interbike is irrelevant. Check out this bit I wrote six years ago:

"The biggest question still out there is "Will moving Interbike and its date even matter?" I would have to say that without the bigger companies commitment to coming to Interbike, and instead, having their own private "dealer camps", Interbike will be ineffectual as a place for the independent bicycle dealer to come to for an overview of what to expect in the coming year. The other thing is that with Sea Otter in the spring, and Eurobike located where it is, I don't see Interbike gaining back much, if any, relevance in as far as introductions of new products and innovations that would draw dealers and the media alike."

Yep- I wrote that last paragraph six years ago. Makes me wonder if that PinkBike guy is just ripping me off. (<===HA! Not really. ) Anyway, this isn't news, it is just inevitability finally playing itself out. Anyone paying attention could see this coming years ago.

For $500.00 you can get this 29"er plus wheel set made to fit a Blackborrow, Surly ICT, or similar fat bike with 197mm rear through axle and 150mm spaced front fork with 15mm through axle. Not only that, but it comes with an XD driver already mounted with a 10T-42T GX cassette. NOT ONLY THAT, but you will also get a brand new set of Bontrager Chupacabra tires, 29 X 3.0" TLR and still on their retail sale cards. The wheels feature Turnagain hubs laced to Velocity Dually rims. Basically, all you'll need to add is tape, valve stems, and your bike and you can have a turnkey 29+ set up for a fat bike. Also- these components have never been used! Brand new stuff!! 

I've decided to go a different direction and I am going to sell these things off as I won't be using them. They were going to go on my Blackborrow at one point. These wheels, tires, and cassette, plus spokes, nipples and labor to build the wheels would normally cost you $1000.00 for the pair. You are getting it all for half price.

Also- I have a lightly used Bluto fat bike fork off a 2015 Salsa Mukluk for sale as well. Make me an offer. I need it to go away as well. Thanks!

Here it is! The longed for Big Dummy in the flesh!

Big Dummy In The House"

Some would say that the "big dummy" is me! Anyway, I got the Big Dummy home last weekend and started using it straight away. I have to say that I was right about this bike. It is sooooo much better than the Xtra-Cycled Schwinn that there can be no comparison.

There is a bit of an odd fit to these things though. I noticed that this bike has gobs of standover, but the seat tube is still 20" in length measured from the center of the crank spindle to the top of the tube. Yet the top tube seems 1990's short. I was a bit cramped and too upright at first. So, I yanked out the Uno seat post I got with the bike and popped in the Salsa Shaft post I had because of the greater set back. It was marginally better, but still not enough, mostly due to the Brooks saddle. Those saddles are notoriously difficult to get set back far enough due to the design of the rails and undercarriage.

So, I got another seat post! This one was a Paul's Tall and Handsome post. First off, it works, it is beautifully simple, and it is beyond well made. Secondly- damn! It is expensive!! I get that it is made in the good ol' USA and all, but it clears $100.00 retail by a lot and let me tell ya folks, it isn't that special. The thing is though, it does as advertised and gets that Brooks right in the sweet spot. Perfect, as a matter of fact. What would you pay for a perfectly set up Brooks? Answer: Waaay too much money, but the results cannot be had in any other way. So, in the end, it was worth it. It made the Big Dummy work better for me, that's for sure.

Three seat posts later and now I am happier yet. I have more to say about this bike. Stay tuned......

Dusting the ol' girl off for the Geezer Ride. Literally dusting it off!

The Ride For The Geezer Ride:

Well, I decided to roll a single speed again for this years Geezer Ride, and I chose the same one I used last year on the Geezer Ride. The thing is, I haven't ridden the ol' girl since the last Geezer Ride! It was in a serious need of dusting off. Yes.....the dust from last year's Geezer Ride! 

Meh!

I have so much going on with bicycles that a mere dusting off is not high on the priority list. I mean, it is a single speed and all. The brakes are fully sealed, with full run housings, and a little dust isn't going to faze this bike. But yeah........I had kind of forgotten all about this bike for far too long. Oh well, it is a good thing the Geezer Ride came around again then!

I took it out for a spin on Wednesday to check on the mechanical soundness of this rig. I ended up flatting. A split in the rear tube. Yes tubes! There is no way I'd ever stay on top of a tubeless set up on this bike. The ride was like an old friend, as it should be. I set this up to mimic the old set up on my '03 Karate Monkey, which until I got the Gen I Fargo in late 2008, was the best fitting and feeling bike I had ever had. So, I was basically out to replicate that with this frame design I did and with the parts set up the way it is. By the way, this is a fillet brazed frame and fork by Mike Pofahl. He does some great stuff.

BarYak Peregrine Arm Rests:

Well, the system is complete now. I told y'all about this BarYak system here. Well, I couldn't get the Peregrine 4 Arm Rests with that back then since the stuff was out of stock, but I just received them yesterday. I'll have to get those things mounted up and show them off here soon.

I think they will make me a bit more confident in riding all "aero-like" on gravel than I thought I might be. I tried riding with the set up as it is just on pavement and I wasn't too sure of myself. Granted, I need practice and I need to use my head. City riding probably isn't the best thing to be doing on aero type bars! I do look forward to trying these out though. I see others using things like this and I know it is a great way to get free speed and give your body a break from the usual positioning.

So, after I fiddle around with the fitting of this set up I will be back with my overview of how I think it can work for me and my needs. I have already made plans for this to go on the fat bike this Winter too. Hopefully I can make it work there as well.

Garage Sale:

Maybe you've noticed the Garage Sale page here. (The link is under the picture on top there.) I stick things on that page I don't need anymore. Well, I haven't heard from anyone regarding that stuff lately and I thought I'd point it out, 'cause, ya know, I have a Big Dummy to pay for. 

Plus I have a couple of other items that are going on there soon,but I'm giving everyone a head's up here first. I have a pair of black anodized Velocity Duallys laced to green anodized Borealis/Turnagain hubs. These would be perfect on a through axle fat bike set up that takes a 150mm front/197mm rear. These have never been on a bike. Brand spankin' new wheels. I also have brand new, in the package Bontrager 29 X 3" Chupacabra tires to go with it. I haven't set a price yet, but feel free to make an offer.  A reasonable offer.

Dusting the ol' girl off for the Geezer Ride. Literally dusting it off!

Well, I decided to roll a single speed again for this years Geezer Ride, and I chose the same one I used last year on the Geezer Ride. The thing is, I haven't ridden the ol' girl since the last Geezer Ride! It was in a serious need of dusting off. Yes.....the dust from last year's Geezer Ride!

I have so much going on with bicycles that a mere dusting off is not high on the priority list. I mean, it is a single speed and all. The brakes are fully sealed, with full run housings, and a little dust isn't going to faze this bike. But yeah........I had kind of forgotten all about this bike for far too long. I see others using things like this and I know it is a great way to get free speed and give your body a break from the usual positioning.

So, after I fiddle around with the fitting of this set up I will be back with my overview of how I think it can work for me and my needs. I have already made plans for this to go on the fat bike this Winter too. Hopefully I can make it work there as well.

Garage Sale:

Maybe you've noticed the Garage Sale page here. (The link is under the picture on top there.) I stick things on that page I don't need anymore. Well, I haven't heard from anyone regarding that stuff lately and I thought I'd point it out, 'cause, ya know, I have a Big Dummy to pay for. 

Plus I have a couple of other items that are going on there soon,but I'm giving everyone a head's up here first. I have a pair of black anodized Velocity Duallys laced to green anodized Borealis/Turnagain hubs. These would be perfect on a through axle fat bike set up that takes a 150mm front/197mm rear. These have never been on a bike. Brand spankin' new wheels. I also have brand new, in the package Bontrager 29 X 3" Chupacabra tires to go with it. I haven't set a price yet, but feel free to make an offer.  A reasonable offer.

Fall is single speed mtb time

With Gravel Worlds over, my ambitious schedule of events has been completed. Quite honestly, I am surprised that I made it to all the events and rode in them. Completion rate stunk, but hey! At my age, there aren't too many guys out there even trying this stuff.

So, anyway, now Fall is on the doormat and coming through. It is my favorite time to goof off on my single speed mountain bikes and to go for lazy rides in the country on my gravel bikes. That will happen, but I also have to start getting things ready for Winter's coming. That means more than sprucing up the fat bikes around here! I have a few house related tasks that need attention before the frost settles in.

Around the blog here I want to get going again with the Lube-Off. I have some things to add to that very shortly, but I also have Fall to go before we get into wetter, colder applications for lube where we may see some different brands rise to the top. Then I also have some things I'll be adding to the Garage Sale page that I will be offering for sale. (Link at the top under the header) By the way, there is a nice deal on some brand spanking new CX tubular wheels on that page. Couple of SS frames as well.

Anyway, things will go from training/racing mode here to a more laid back mode. I will be doing more Trans Iowa related things coming up soon also, so if that tickles your fancy, stay tuned for that.
